His new album OWL SONG has been nominated for best instrumental jazz album at the GRAMMY Awards 2025: on stage at Jazzinsieme 2025, Ambrose Akinmusire.
“Ambrose doesn’t sound like a rising star, but one already at the top, just waiting to be discovered. ”
Los Angeles Times
In his fifteen-year career, Ambrose Akinmusire has moved between the centre and peripheries of jazz, exploring new territories in classical and hip hop. His innovative approach to sound and composition has made him one of the most respected musicians of his generation, garnering awards and commissions from prestigious institutions such as the Doris Duke Foundation and the Kennedy Center.
Growing up in Oakland, he caught the attention of Steve Coleman as a teenager, joining his band and beginning touring the world. After studying at the Thelonious Monk Institute with such masters as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, he won the Monk International Jazz Competition and debuted with When The Heart Emerges Glistening for Blue Note, winning over critics with his bold, out-of-the-box style.
Each of his albums is a profound quest, ranging from orchestral experimentation(The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint) to contaminations with spoken word and hip hop(Origami Harvest), to the intense social reflections of On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment. His latest project, Owl Song, marks a new chapter: a minimal and meditative work, where sound becomes essential, each note a dialogue suspended between silence and intention.
