Michele Campanella and Javier Girotto, in their original interpretation of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, engage in this work with their descriptive and narrative structure, which through music leads the listener on a journey through the paintings of the painter V. A. Hartmann, culminating in the image of the Great Gate of Kiev. A musical journey in which the opening of this great door probably and metaphorically leads right into the future.
The second part will feature the Orchestra Filarmonici Friulani for the performance of the Pictures in the version by Maurice Ravel, whose 150th birthday it is, for large symphony orchestra. The various pieces thus take on different and innovative orchestral colours each time, thanks to the mastery of Ravel, probably the most skilful composer of all time in combining and matching the timbres of the instruments. The journey through the pictures is thus enriched in a new guise, in which the individual characteristics of the pieces, already distinctive in themselves, are further emphasised, making the Pictures in Ravel’s orchestration one of the timeless classics of every orchestra’s repertoire.
Michele Campanella
Trained at the school of Vincenzo Vitale, Michele Campanella began his career as a pianist
virtuoso and then broadened his horizons to include conducting and essay writing, to the point where he is now a reference point for music in Italy. The Franz Liszt Society of Budapest awarded him the Grand Prix du Disque in 1976, 1977 and 1998, the latter for the recording ‘Franz Liszt – The Great Transcriptions I-II’ published by Philips. In 1986, the Hungarian Ministry of Culture awarded him the medal for ‘Liszt merits’, as did the American Liszt Society in 2002. Michele Campanella is an artist of very versatile temperament.
Javier Girotto
At the age of 19, he won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, where he graduated in Professional Music “Cum Magna Laude”. Javier Girotto’s Italian adventure began at the age of 25, and he soon decided to start his professional career in this country. He alternates collaboration with commercial, Latin music groups with the formation of several jazz groups, with which he begins his tireless activity as composer and arranger. With Aires Tango, he recorded no less than 10 records and in 2009 they celebrated 15 years of life with their record ’10/15′ (to indicate the group’s 10th record and 15 years of life), gems of a journey in which Girotto was always accompanied by the unconditional acclaim of the public, who encouraged him to ‘open’ the project to the voice of Peppe Servillo and the symphony orchestra.
Orchestra Giovani Filarmonici Friulani
Music and culture by young people for young people. With this spirit, in 2015 the Filarmonici Friulani Youth Orchestra was born, the only example in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of a musical ensemble managed, coordinated and curated by under-35s and recognised by the Ministry of Culture. It is the winner of the Premio Epifania 2024.
Felix Hornbachner
The young Austrian conductor Felix Hornbachner won the 3rd prize at the Arturo Toscanini competition in Parma in 2021. In 2019, he was chosen by Maestro Riccardo Muti to actively participate in the Italian Opera Academy with the Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini under Maestro Muti. In previous years, Hornbachner was invited to conduct two operas (Le Nozze di Figaro and W.A.Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito) with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy. To date, the young conductor has collaborated with the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra, the Wiener Concert-Verein, the Elche Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonie Salzburg and the Beethoven Philharmonie. Since 2021, he has been principal conductor of the Pannon Youth Orchestra based in Eisenstadt Castle.
